M7 2023 PGA Championship - Ready for the off

lobo2210

It's time for the second M7 of the year. After this one we will be halfway through our tortuous season! And let's be honest with a field of 156 players to pick from this is where we start to separate the men from the boys

Full picks are in the email I sent and can be seen by going to https://m7golf.wixsite.com/m7golf/leaderboard.

Please check your own entry is correct. Any objections please raise before tee off. N.B. "My picks are sh*t" is not a valid objection - that is your own fault

There are 99 of us going for the big prizes (+ our good friends Control and Wisdom) - no show from Stephen 'Tramps' Begley

Prizes (TBC)

1st - S$5000

2nd - S$2800

3rd - S$1600

Best of Rest (<5 make cut) - S$600

Lets get this out the way. The following have no chance whatsoever:

  • Justin 'Tally' Price and Darren 'Wedge' Heal as they won the masters (no one wins back to back M7s)

  • Remi 'RAR' Tache winner of last year's PGA Championship (no one successfully defends an M7 championship)

What does it take to win M7?

I mentioned last time that the average winning score at the masters M7 was around 43 points (36 won it this year) but that the other majors tend to score higher. The PGA average winning score is 53 points - so there is a little more wiggle room normally. However as you will see below the picks are quite bunched again - more so than normal in a tournament like this

Who picked who?

69 different players picked which is a very small 44% of the field. This compares with 90 different players (58% of the field) last year!

Paul Casey was the only pick who is not playing (withdrawal yesterday). Two of you had him in your team.

One of you has picked Woodland in the (>75) category which is sadly invalid given he ranks 75th in the OWGR we are using - so all in all 3 of you playing M6

Picks are really dominated by 4 players (3 of the 4 were popular last time too): The most popular pick is DJ (83) followed by Koepka (79), Day (61) and Rahm (55)

The following all have over 20 picks each also

  • Gooch (33)

  • Finau (32)

  • Scheffler (28)

  • Fleetwood (28)

  • Matsuyama (21)

All in all this makes for another bunched selection of picks

69 of you have the most popular 2 all in your team (DJ, Koepka)

48 of you have the most popular 3 all in your team (DJ, Koepka, Day)

29 of you have the most popular 4 all in your team (DJ, Koepka, Day, Rahm)

12 of you have the most popular 5 all in your team (DJ, Koepka, Day, Rahm, Gooch)

Norman's (Wisdom) team is Rahm, Finau, Fleetwood, Day, Koepka, Gooch and DJ.....No one has the same exact same 7 - congratulations Justin 'Tally' Price on a more 'adventurous' selection (he still has 6 of the 7 - swapping Matsuyama for Fleetwood)

We had a 16 valid unique picks in all - 1 of those in 1-10 category (Fitzpatrick).

David 'Wayne' Kerr (Poston and Detry) is the only person with 2 uniques in their teams Bryson is the highest ranked OWGR player picked (201) - 6 of you have DeShambles hoping his long drives can give him an edge here.

What about the LIV splitters?

There are 18 LIV players due to tee-off on Thursday and again with most of them featuring on the wrong end of the OWGR it made them an appealing proposition for M7'ers

They account for 28% of all picks in M7. This is a little lower than the 30% they accounted for at the Masters.

13 of the 18 have at least one pick somewhere in M7

5 of you has swerved LIV altogether. At least you can hold your head high Andrew 'Bullet Baxter' Moffat, Charlie 'Smirnoff' Vodrazka, David 'Simon Says' Simonsen, John 'Balsa' Wood and Dave 'Molton' Browne when you are in the BOTR competition come Saturday.

Speed and Uncertainty Fastest finger - Well done Chris 'Blubba' Watson Most entries - Daniel 'Snake' Martin with 5 Leaving it to last minute - Alastair 'Baloney' Loney with 37 mins to spare (2nd entry)

Best of luck!!

Live m7 scoring will be up and running tomorrow after tee off on https://m7golf.wixsite.com/m7golf.

27 is the M7 record score to beat - set at the Masters in 2021 by Matthew 'Beevower' Price but of course lets not forget the best record of the lot - John 'Cliff' Talbot Snrs even more incredible record of 500 pts.

The best PGA Championship score is 33 set in 2014 by Stephen 'The Pig' Farmer

Reminder - "You can't win M7 on the first day but you sure as hell can lose it" - Alastair 'Baloney' Loney
